Healthy Lakes Grant Continues Progress on Area Lakes

Frozen lakes provide the perfect setting to improve nearshore habitat. With winter in full swing, we’d like to thank a couple on Upper Eau Claire Lake who installed two fish stick complexes in December that will be partially submerged when spring arrives. These trees will provide feeding, breeding and nesting areas for all kinds of animals, from fish to songbirds. They will also help prevent bank erosion. These were the final two practices installed for our 2023 DNR Healthy Lakes and Rivers grant.

Due to the thin ice in December, these complexes were installed from shore with design guidance from DNR staff. Trees were harvested well away from shore and then moved to the lake where they were anchored to the shore and cabled together. Thank you again to the property owners, and to the DNR Healthy Lakes and Rivers Program – we applied for and administered grant funds on behalf of property owners on Lower Eau Claire, Upper Eau Claire and Shunenberg lakes.
